Multistate Performance Test (MPT)
The MPT tests your ability to "think like a lawyer." The MPT, drafted by the
National Conference of Bar Examiners, is a closed-universe writing assignment designed to parallel a realistic situation encountered by a new attorney (e.g., a client letter, a closing argument, a brief, etc.). BARBRI has been preparing students for this section of the bar since 1983.
New York uses one 90-minute Multistate Performance Test ("MPT"). Because the MPT does not test your knowledge of the law, you will receive a "file" and a "library" containing all the information needed to complete the assignment. The "file" includes documents containing the facts of the case and a memorandum from a supervising attorney describing a task to be completed. The "library" contains cases, statutes, rules and regulations that may or may not be relevant to the problem. You must both decipher and apply appropriate authorities.
The BARBRI MPT Workbook contains both past and simulated MPT questions. The BARBRI MPT Workshop is included in your BARBRI course and is ONLY available for current BARBRI students. Separate enrollment is not required. The MPT Workshop provides you with the skills and techniques required to succeed on this section of the bar exam. You will be instructed on how to decipher the files and libraries presented, how to analyze the various types of problems and how to manage your time.
