Professor Stanley Johanson

Wills & Trusts

Professor Stanley M. Johanson is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Washington Law School. Before joining The University of Texas faculty, he was a Teaching Fellow at Harvard Law School. Professor Johanson has been on the faculty of The University of Texas School of Law since 1963, where he is the University Distinguished Teaching Professor and holds the James A. Elkins Centennial Chair in Law. He currently teaches courses on Estate Planning and Wills & Estates.

Professor Johanson has been voted by the students to receive Teaching Excellence awards on seven occasions, most recently in 2011. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Texas Probate and Trust Law, was the recipient of the endowed Massey Teaching Excellence Award at the Law School. He also was elected by the National Association of Estate Planning Councils to the Estate Planning Hall of Fame.

Professor Johanson’s publications include Johanson's Texas Probate Code Annotated. He has co-authored law school casebook adopted at over 120 American law schools. Professor Johanson has taught as a visiting professor at several other law schools, including Florida State, Georgetown, Indiana, North Carolina, Utah, the University of Washington, UCLA, and the University of Chicago.
