This CLE course will provide guidance to counsel advising employers in employee-friendly California on navigating the myriad new and/or amended state laws that establish or expand worker protections and may increase the risk of employer liability. The panel will review key changes for California employment law practice beginning in 2017 and discuss best practices for employers to ensure compliance and avoid liability.
Description
In 2016, the California Legislature passed more than 20 new employment laws that will immediately impact employers operating in the state. Beginning in 2017, employers are prohibited from paying any employee wages lower than those paid to another employee of a different race or ethnicity for “substantially similar work.” A new law also gives eligible employees an increase in benefits paid while on paid family leave and state disability leave. In addition, employers are now required to inform each employee of his or her right to take time off to deal with issues arising from being a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking.
There are also new local laws impacting California employers, including new or amended sick leave laws in San Diego, San Francisco and Berkeley, as well as San Francisco’s new Paid Parental Leave law. Employment law counsel must grasp the new laws and their anticipated impact on employers in order to advise their clients on best practices to ensure compliance and avoid liability.
Listen as our distinguished panel of California employment law attorneys thoroughly reviews the new state employment laws that are becoming effective in 2017 and discusses the practical implications for employers in California. The panel will guide counsel on helping clients ensure their employment policies, handbooks and employment documents are up to date to minimize worker claims and civil penalties.
