Every year, law students approach us with a critical question: Should I start studying early for the bar exam? Some wonder whether getting a head start will improve their chances of passing, while others worry it will only add stress to an already demanding final year of law school.

BARBRIs experience and student performance data point to a clear answer. Students who begin engaging with bar prep materials earlier are better positioned for success. That doesnʼt mean you need to spend months studying full-time before graduation. However, starting even a little early helps create a stronger foundation for the intensive study period ahead.

Give Yourself the Best Opportunity to Pass

For most, the goal of bar prep is to pass the bar exam on your first attempt. While that may mean dedicating 8 to 10 weeks to a BARBRI Bar Review course, our data reveals a powerful trend. Those who engage with BARBRI bar prep tools and materials earlier often gain a meaningful advantage.

Even a small amount of early work can help you:

  • Become familiar with heavily tested subjects
  • Understand what the bar exam requires
  • Reduce the pressure of learning everything at once
  • Build confidence before the intensive study period begins

BARBRI Bar Review courses include earlier access to gain a competitive edge. You have up to four months of full access to all assignments and materials, so you get a head start and don't have to sprint to the finish line. Since you don't have to wait for a static course start date, you can begin reviewing Foundations Episodes and other assignments early to get an introduction to key legal concepts and subjects.

Should I Consider Early Bar Prep?

The answer depends largely on your personal circumstances, learning style, and how much time you can realistically devote to your studies.

Full-Time Study Schedule

If you can treat bar prep like a full-time job, most experts recommend approximately 400 hours of dedicated study time spread across 8–10 weeks for the legacy UBE. For NextGen, study demands may look somewhat different due to the exam's more focused content scope and practical skills orientation. You might find you spend fewer hours memorizing law and more time engaging with realistic legal tasks and integrated practice exercises.

As a rule of thumb for either exam:

  • July Bar Exam: Begin studying in mid-to-late May
  • February Bar Exam: Begin studying in mid-to-late December

This approach allows you to immerse yourself in the material while keeping concepts fresh through consistent review and practice.

Part-Time Study Schedule

If you are balancing work, family responsibilities, or other commitments, a longer study timeline is often the better option to lighten your weekly load. The BARBRI Extended U.S. Bar Prep (International) part-time schedule spans 6 or 10 months, allowing you to integrate studying into your existing life without having to cram. This can be a powerful option for non-traditional students and non-U.S. law graduates looking to qualify in the U.S.

  • For the July Exam: The 6-month, part-time schedule typically begins in January.
  • For the February Exam: Preparation starts in September for the 6-month course.

Starting your bar exam preparation early is particularly beneficial if you find yourself facing subjects you never studied in law school or ones that were especially challenging. If you know multiple-choice questions or legal writing are not your strong suits, early practice can also turn those weaknesses into strengths.

Extended Study Access

BARBRI recognizes that every student’s study timeline is unique. That’s why extended course access is available as an add-on for both our Premium and Elite Bar Review options. With extended access, you get a full six months to study, review, and pace your prep the way you need.

Spread the Workload to Avoid Burnout

Rather than having that last-minute push, a smarter approach to bar exam prep is to view it as a marathon. Starting early gives you the opportunity to build foundational knowledge at a manageable pace.  before your official study calendar becomes more demanding.

Instead of learning concepts for the first time during bar review, you'll spend your intensive study period strengthening and applying material you've already seen. Time spent building key skills early is time and stress you save later. You'll feel prepared for bar review and prevent the burnout that can derail even the most dedicated students.

BARBRIʼs proprietary Personalized Study Plan (PSP) makes the learning process even more flexible by allowing you to customize your schedule, set full or half days off, and automatically adjust assignments based on your progress.

Why Cramming Doesnʼt Work for the Bar Exam

We’ve all crammed for a final exam, and sometimes, it was enough to get by. That strategy will not work for the bar exam, however.

Passing the bar requires true learning and retention, not last-minute memorization. This is why beginning your bar exam studies before the pressure sets in is a good approach. Through our animated Foundations Episodes, you lay the groundwork for knowledge building. That foundational knowledge stays with you, making the intensive study period more about refinement and less about initial learning.
