Gray, who started his career in medical technology, was drawn to the legal field which influenced his desire to switch careers. This led him to prepare for the SQE with BARBRI and here he shares the support and resources that helped him pass.

Gray, what inspired your decision to change careers from medical technology to law?

It all started when I became inspired by the law, particularly how it impacts different aspects of society and business. I initially completed the JDL and the LLM, but when I looked at the traditional LPC route, I realised that it was not only extremely expensive but also highly competitive. Every year, thousands of people apply for training contracts, and the disappointment rate is quite high. But the SQE, with its more accessible structure, seemed like the perfect way to switch careers without the barriers that come with traditional routes. It opened up the legal profession to people like me who don’t come from a traditional legal background.

How did you find the SQE?

For me, the biggest advantage of the SQE is that it is much more accessible and anyone who applies themselves and is ambitious enough can become a solicitor. It’s a more practical approach and allows for a broader range of people, including career changers like me, to pursue law without the barriers of expensive courses and highly competitive training contracts. The SQE seems more approachable for those of us who want to excel in the legal field but don’t necessarily have the traditional legal background.

What made you choose BARBRI for your SQE preparation?

I first heard about BARBRI’s SQE prep in the UK and it was a no-brainer for me. BARBRI has years of experience in preparing students for the US Bar exam, and they have a proven track record of high results. When I found out they were offering the SQE prep, I felt confident in their ability to provide the kind of support I needed. I knew that BARBRI’s experience with exam preparation would be invaluable, and I’m happy to say I have no regrets about my decision. They’ve helped me prepare for SQE1 successfully, and now I’m getting ready for SQE2 with their guidance.

How does studying with BARBRI differ from traditional university courses in your experience?

One of the key differences is the level of support. It might sound counter-intuitive, but I found BARBRI’s staff to be much more approachable and responsive than what I experienced at a conventional university. At university, lecturers often do their lectures and then disappear leaving students with little opportunity for further questions. With BARBRI, I never waited more than 24 hours for a response to any of my questions. Even if I prefixed a question with “this might sound like a stupid question,” the staff were always incredibly supportive and took the time to explain things thoroughly. The personalised support was a huge benefit and really helped me feel confident in my studies.

What do you think is the biggest advantage of the SQE over the LPC for aspiring solicitors?

For me, it’s more practically oriented and applicable to real-life situations. The LPC, although thorough, feels more focused on theory and academic learning. On the other hand, the SQE, includes real-world assessments like advocacy and smaller written exams, and the two years of qualifying work experience ensures that you’re gaining practical experience throughout the process. It’s a more holistic approach to becoming a solicitor, and feels like a better fit.

Can you share your thoughts on the resources and materials that was provided for SQE preparation?

BARBRI provides excellent resources and materials. The study plans are well-structured, and I appreciate how they break everything down into manageable chunks. I never felt overwhelmed because I knew exactly what I needed to focus on each week. Additionally, the practice assessments and mock exams are invaluable in preparing you for the real thing. BARBRI also offers detailed feedback, which has been crucial in helping me refine my approach. The online learning environment is also very user-friendly and the ability to study at my own pace, while still receiving top-notch support, has made the process much easier and more enjoyable.

What are your plans after qualifying as a solicitor?

I plan to practice as a solicitor and continue building on the knowledge and skills I’ve gained throughout my studies. My ultimate goal is to specialise in a field of law that combines my interests in both technology and legal systems. I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead especially in an area as dynamic as legal technology, which is becoming more integrated into legal practices these days.

What advice would you give to someone considering the SQE route?

My advice would be to go for it, especially if you’re someone looking for a more flexible and practical route into law. The SQE is a great option for career changers like me, and it’s much more accessible than traditional routes. Also, choose a prep course provider like BARBRI that offers comprehensive support and guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make sure you’re getting the feedback you need. The support is there, and with the right resources, you can achieve your goals, no matter your background.
