Zaheer Ul Hassan Cheema is a solicitor and the director at Britlaw Chambers Ltd with experience as a registered foreign lawyer. In this blog, he shares why he chose to study for the SQE and why he found BARBRI's prep course flexible and intuitive.
My name is Zaheer Ul Hassan Cheema. I am a solicitor of England & Wales, a qualified advocate of the Higher Courts in Pakistan, and the founder of BritLaw Chambers Ltd—a regulated immigration law firm based in Manchester. I am also practising as a criminal defence solicitor. With over seven years of legal experience in both domestic and international legal systems, I specialise in immigration law, civil litigation, and criminal defence, providing expert legal services to clients from diverse backgrounds.
What Attracted You to a Career in Law?
I have always believed in the transformative power of law as a means to uphold justice, protect rights, and offer a voice to the voiceless. Coming from Pakistan, I saw firsthand the difference that committed legal representation can make in people's lives, especially for those who lack access to justice. This early exposure inspired me to pursue law as a lifelong career. Moving to the UK, I was equally drawn to the structure and integrity of the British legal system, and I was determined to be a part of it.
What Is Your Background and Route to Qualification?
I began my legal journey with an LL. B from the International Islamic University in Pakistan, followed by an LL.M in International Commercial Law from the University of Bedfordshire in the UK. I qualified as an Advocate of the High Court in Pakistan and practiced in both civil and criminal law before moving to the UK. Once in the UK, I registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) as a foreign qualified lawyer. I worked extensively within UK legal firms, gaining experience in immigration and civil litigation, before completing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) to become a solicitor of England & Wales.
Why Did You Decide to Follow the SQE Route?
As a foreign-qualified lawyer, the SQE provided a clear and practical path to full qualification in England and Wales. It was particularly appealing because it recognised my prior experience and education while ensuring that I met the rigorous standards expected of solicitors here. The flexibility of the route also allowed me to continue working and running my firm while studying for the exams.
Did You Experience Any Challenges Along the Way?
Absolutely. Balancing the demands of running my own law firm, managing a busy caseload, and studying for the SQE was a significant challenge. In addition, adapting to a different legal culture, understanding UK-specific procedures, and staying compliant with both OISC and SRA regulations required a steep learning curve. As a husband and father, managing family commitments alongside professional development also tested my resilience and time-management skills.
How Did You Push Through And Overcome Those Challenges?
Discipline, planning, and a strong support system made the difference. I built a rigorous schedule, often studying early in the morning or late at night. The support of my family was invaluable, and I also leaned on my professional network. I stayed focused on my long-term goal of qualifying as a solicitor and expanding my practice. Each hurdle became a motivation rather than a deterrent.
Which Part of the BARBRI Course Did You Find Particularly Useful?
The BARBRI course provided structure and clarity at every step. Their online platform (PSP) was flexible and intuitive, allowing me to study around my professional commitments. The practice questions, mock exams, and focused revision materials helped me understand the format and expectations of the SQE. The ability to track my progress and adjust my learning based on analytics gave me confidence in my preparation. Q: Did you use any additional BARBRI services like coaching or career support? Yes, I found the learning coach support extremely beneficial. Having someone to guide my study approach, suggest strategies, and hold me accountable added a personal touch to what can be a solitary process. Their feedback was tailored and actionable, helping me make the most of my limited study time.
Tell Us More About Your Current Legal Practice
I currently run my own immigration law firm in Manchester, regulated by the Immigration Services Commissioner (IAA), where I provide advice and representation on a range of UK immigration matters including Sponsor Licences, Skilled Worker visas, nationality, PBS and EU Settlement Scheme applications. Alongside this, I have recently qualified as a solicitor and am building my practice in criminal defence law and I am actively gaining experience and expanding my capabilities in this area. My goal is to provide well-rounded legal support that meets the evolving needs of clients, delivered with professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and a strong commitment to ethical practice.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your Work?
I find deep satisfaction in helping clients navigate some of the most stressful times of their lives—whether it's dealing with immigration uncertainty or trying to regularise their legal status in the UK. These situations often carry emotional and personal weight, and being able to provide clarity, reassurance, and a clear way forward is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the relief and hope on a client’s face when we achieve a positive outcome reminds me exactly why I chose this profession. As I continue to grow in my criminal defence practice, I look forward to expanding the ways in which I can support clients in vulnerable situations with integrity and diligence.
What Advice Would You Give to Aspiring Lawyers?
Believe in yourself and trust the journey. The path to becoming a lawyer isn’t always easy, but every challenge you face is shaping you into the professional you’re meant to become. Stay focused, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to take unconventional routes—what matters is your passion, not how you got there. If you're an internationally trained lawyer, know that your experience is not a limitation—it’s your strength. Your background gives you a wider lens and a deeper understanding of the clients you’ll serve. The legal profession needs diversity of thought, culture, and experience now more than ever. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, never stop learning, and always remember why you started. Your voice matters, and there is space for you in this profession.
