If you imagined your career over the next 10 years, what would it look like? Would it follow a neat, predictable path, or something more flexible and unique to you? Steph Day, Careers and Employability Manager, explores how the legal profession is evolving and why the traditional path is no longer the only route to success.
For anyone considering a career in law, the traditional route of university, training contract, junior and senior roles, then partnership, can seem like the only option. Today, with the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) it is easier than ever to enter the legal profession from a variety of backgrounds, even after completing a non-law degree or pursuing another career first.
Some people start out in law and then move into other careers within the profession or into entirely different sectors. Others discover law later in life, bringing experience from fields like business, teaching or public service, and these transferable skills can be a real advantage. It is important to remember the path you take into law does not determine your long-term success.
Not taking the traditional route, retraining, switching sectors or taking time to explore different specialisms is normal. It is not a sign of failure. Yet sometimes it feels like pressure is placed on us to follow a set route, achieve promotions and aim for leadership positions. This does not fit everyone, and it is important to think about what brings you fulfilment.
Some lawyers find fulfilment in niche practice areas, advisory roles or smaller firms where the pace is different and there is more work-life balance. Careers in law are about more than titles or prestige, it’s about finding work that motivates you, challenges you and allows growth.
Changing direction, exploring a new sector or entering law later than your peers does not mean you are behind. It means you are shaping a career that works for you. We spend so much time at work, so being happy should be the ultimate goal.
11 tips for those on a non-traditional legal career pathway:
-
Speak to people at different stages of their careers
You will find there is no single story that looks the same, which can be reassuring when you feel unsure about your own direction.
-
Treat qualifying work experience as exploration, not a lifelong commitment
Use it to test areas you are curious about and notice what interests and energises you.
-
Think outside the box
There are other opportunities than just working in a law firm. Look at in-house, charities, public sector and explore further.
-
Be honest about what you want from work
If you value stability, variety or flexibility, take that into account when you look at roles or firms/organisations. It’s better to choose a route that suits you, than one that simply looks impressive.
-
Give yourself permission to change your mind
What suited you at twenty, might not suit you when you get to thirty or forty. People change and other priorities come into play.
