Description

Cybersecurity attacks are increasing in frequency and severity in healthcare. In 2021, a record 45 million people were affected by healthcare cyberattacks.

On Sept. 14, 2022, the FBI warned the healthcare industry about escalating cyberattack activity against providers and payment processors. The FBI provided recommendations for both providers and processors to reduce their risk. Among other things, the FBI calls for healthcare companies to implement training for employees on how to identify and report phishing, social engineering, and spoofing attempts; advise employees to exercise caution while revealing sensitive information; mitigate vulnerabilities related to third-party vendors; and ensure company policies include verification about interactions with third-party vendors.

Cyber insurance also plays a role in the healthcare industry as a complement to other risk management practices.
