About the Course
Introduction
This CLE/CPE webinar will provide tax attorneys, CPAs, and enrolled agents a comprehensive and practical guide to navigating IRS collection procedures. The panel will discuss the stages of the IRS collection process, notices, tax liens, taxpayer rights, and available options in handling federal tax debt.
Description
Taxpayers who fail to file a tax return, omit key items from a tax filing, or otherwise owe federal tax debt, are subject to IRS enforced collections. The processes involved can be daunting to taxpayers and tax professionals representing such taxpayers must understand IRS collections in order to effectively resolve federal tax debt for taxpayers.
One of the most frightening events for delinquent taxpayers is receiving an IRS notice indicating that the Service is pursuing an enforced collection action. Unfortunately, tax counsel often becomes involved only after the time period in which negotiation and resolution can be handled by correspondence and payment plans.
The IRS' primary method for collecting tax debt is the use of their lien, levy, and asset seizure powers. Each of these actions has a defined course of escalating notice and response requirements. Depending on the nature of the tax due and the stage of the collection process, there may be defense and mitigation remedies available for a collection action.
Tax counsel must have an advanced understanding of the IRS enforced collection process to effectively defend taxpayers who find themselves subject to IRS collections.
Listen as our panel discusses the stages of the IRS collection process and offers available options for handling federal tax debt.
