Eliminating Bias in Jury Selection: Voir Dire, Juror Exclusion, and Reform

Ms. Margolin is an American attorney from Beverly Hills, CA. She has authored over thirty writs and written appeals in state court alone, along with habeas corpus cases, appearing in courts across multiple counties in California and pro hac vice in other states. Ms. Margolin regularly consults the Los Angeles Public Defender Appellate Department on various legal issues related to criminal defense practice and is on the Appellate’s Division of Appointed Attorneys. Over the past two decades, she has handled a diverse range of cases in both state and federal courts. Ms. Margolin began her legal career representing people with terminal diseases who were facing criminal charges for marijuana activity. By 2008, she had a reputation for getting cases dismissed, and for recovering marijuana plants that had been seized by the police. Ms. Margolin's caseload has included various criminal cases, from marijuana-related offenses to murder, as well as DUIs, kidnapping, sexual battery, forgery, theft, burglary, and robbery cases.

Mr. McGreevy has extensive trial and litigation experience in federal and state courts. He was lead counsel in over 50 jury trials. Mr. McGreevy represents individuals and entities in a wide variety of matters, including white collar criminal investigations and defense, general criminal defense, regulatory matters before state and federal agencies, civil litigation and appeals. He has represented some of Denver’s largest law firms on investigations into alleged misconduct, as well as individual lawyers accused of criminal or unethical conduct. Mr. McGreevy was appointed by OARC as special prosecutor to investigate and litigate a disciplinary matter when it had a conflict of interest. A significant component of his practice is white collar investigations and defense. Companies hire Mr. McGreevy to advise on issues of criminal liability, respond to grand jury subpoenas in State and Federal courts, and conduct internal investigations. He also represents individuals accused of white-collar criminal conduct, including cases of insider trading, securities fraud, theft, public corruption, health care fraud, bid rigging, insurance fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud and antitrust violations. Mr. McGreevy represents people before the various regulatory agencies and investigators, including the S.E.C., Commodity Futures Trading Commission, National Transportation Safety Board, Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the Division of Securities, FINRA, and various licensing boards.

Ms. Steinhauser is a judge, a trial lawyer, adjunct professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and NITA Instructor. She has practiced law for 42 years and has tried more than 300 jury trials and has been recognized as a Super Lawyer from 2012-2022. Judge Steinhauser has taught Evidence and Trial Advocacy as well as other substantive classes at Denver Law for 32 years and was the traveling mock trial coach for 17 years, leading the teams to two National Championships. She has been a faculty member for NITA for 32 years, serving as a Program Director for custom programs such as Trial Skills Programs, Deposition Programs, Fact Finding Programs and Mediation Programs, and has also served as Co-Program Director for NITA’s flagship National Trial Skills Program.
