EU Data Laws: How European Laws Affect U.S. Domestic Business Data Governance

Examining and Complying With the EU’s GDPR, DSA, DMA, AI, and Data Acts

About the Course

Introduction

This CLE webinar will examine the European Union's (EU) digital data regulatory landscape and highlight critical considerations under the most significant frameworks. Their implications for domestic data processing, products, and sharing services will be examined; compliance challenges and requirements will be shared; and notable enforcement trends discussed. The program will conclude with risk management and data governance strategies.

Description

European law governing technology has been both growing and shifting, creating a complex and vital regulatory mosaic around data management and protection. From data privacy under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), to platform behavior under the Digital Services Act (DSA), and now a comprehensive risk-based structure governing AI under the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act), there is scarcely a use of data that is not touched in some way by European law.

What do the dominance, thoroughness, and ubiquity of European law around data and technology mean for organizational data governance structures? Although European laws have been continuing to shift (either through guidance, enforcement, or reconsideration of certain aspects of the EU AI Act and GDPR), they continue to set the global standard either by having an outsized influence on global organizational behavior, or by influencing the development of other laws around the world (including in the U.S.).

While specific laws, as well as the interaction between laws, create compliance complexity, certain principles have also emerged that provide an often coherent, if sometimes bewildering, comprehensive framework that organizations can build into data risk management systems. During this webcast, our panel will examine the GDPR, EU AI Act, DSA, and DMA—and their salient provisions. Analysis will focus on the scope and products and services impacted by these EU laws, and how to interpret and rely on governing body guidance. The presentation will conclude with enforcement highlights and how to translate these efforts into scalable organizational risk management and compliance strategies for business clients.

Listen as our authoritative panel provides practical considerations and guidance for establishing domestic data governance policies and compliance strategies that meet the requirements of these intersecting and sometimes conflicting EU data laws.
