Bar Exam Details

Effective for the July 2026 exam, a typical Wisconsin Bar Exam is a 2-day Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). Effective with the July 2028 exam, Wisconsin will administer the NextGen UBE.

Day 1

  • Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test questions (MPT in the AM)
  • Six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam questions (MEE in the PM)

Day 2

  • Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam (100 questions in the AM, 100 questions in the PM)

  • Criminal Law/Procedure
  • Evidence
  • Federal Civil Procedure
  • Real Property
  • Torts

MEE

  • Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations; and Limited Liability Companies)
  • Conflict of Laws
  • Family Law
  • Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests)
  • Article 9 (Secured Transactions) of the Uniform Commercial Code
  • Plus all MBE subjects

*Effective with the July 2026 bar exam, the following subjects will no longer be tested on the MEE: Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, and Secured Transactions. 

MPT

  • “Closed universe” practical questions using instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.

MPRE

  • Not required for admission to Wisconsin bar.

Scoring

The MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE.

  • MBE weighted 50%
  • MEE weighted 30%
  • MPT weighted 20%

A total scaled score of 260 or higher is required to pass the Wisconsin Bar Exam.

Reciprocity

Acceptance of MBE Score

  • Applicant may transfer scaled MBE score of at least 135 if within 37 months and from a successful exam taken no more than 60 days before the J.D. was conferred.

Admission on Motion

  • A member in good standing of another U.S. state or territory may be admitted on motion in Wisconsin if the applicant has engaged in the active practice of law for three of the five years preceding application. Additional requirements apply.

Admission by UBE Score Transfer

Applicants who have obtained a scaled score of at least 260 on a Uniform Bar Exam taken in another jurisdiction may apply for admission based on that score. Additional requirements apply.

Additional Information

  • Applicants may take the exam prior to graduation if degree was received within 60 days after the exam.

Admission by Diploma Privilege

  • Under diploma privilege, graduates of the University of Wisconsin Law School and Marquette University Law School are admitted to the practice of law by complying with the terms of SCR 40.03 – their school certifies their legal competence and the Board of Bar Examiners certifies their character and fitness for the practice of law. Additional requirements may apply.

Wisconsin Law and Practice Educational Component

Before being admitted to the practice of law in Wisconsin by UBE examination or by transferred UBE score, an applicant must successfully complete 21 hours of the Wisconsin law and practice educational component. The Wisconsin law and practice educational component shall be completed no later than 12 months after receiving notification of a passing UBE score or within 12 months of filing an application for admission via an eligible UBE transfer score. The Wisconsin law and practice educational component will be comprised of subject matter areas based on the requirements of the diploma privilege.
