If you're preparing to take the legacy Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), you should know that the MBE will account for 50% of your total score. With 200 multiple-choice questions to answer over six hours on a wide range of legal topics and subtopics, it's one of the most significant portions of the UBE.
Each multiple-choice question is drafted by a committee of law professors, so your reading comprehension skills are sure to be put to the test. You can trust BARBRI Bar Review for everything you need to know about studying for the bar exam, including the MBE. Just remember the following tips for MBE success when the time comes for your bar prep.
Note: The MBE is a component of the legacy UBE and is not part of the new NextGen UBE, which is being adopted by jurisdictions on a rolling basis. If you're unsure whether your jurisdiction is administering the legacy UBE or the NextGen UBE, review BARBRI's guide to the NextGen Bar Exam and your jurisdiction's testing requirements before beginning your preparation.
Practice Under Timed Conditions
Because the MBE represents half of the scoring on the legacy UBE, developing stamina and pacing is just as important as mastering substantive law. To help you build up the physical and mental endurance you will need, BARBRI Bar Review integrates more than 400 licensed MBE questions released by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) directly into our course Personalized Study Plan (PSP). You also have access to more than 600 additional released questions through More Practice in the PSP. (This is in addition to the thousands of BARBRI-authored MBE questions.)
The secret to success here is to do practice exams under timed conditions to replicate, as much as possible, the actual bar exam experience.
The 200-question BARBRI Simulated Exam provides a detailed score analysis comparing your performance to every other BARBRI student taking the exam. This score report highlights how you are performing on every topic and subtopic, so you can adjust how you are studying based on this report. The score report can be very enlightening, so be sure to take this exam when you see it on your study plan schedule.
Focus Where It Matters Most
While the MBE tests seven core subjects on the legacy UBE, not every topic is tested with the same frequency. A smart study plan focuses on the concepts that appear most often, so you can make the most of your prep time.
BARBRI's bar instruction team has analyzed exam trends for decades to identify the areas that matter most. Instead of trying to memorize every possible rule, you can focus on the topics most likely to impact your score.
Our adaptive PSP prioritizes assignments based on heavily tested areas of law, helping you study efficiently. The Conviser Mini Review: A Score Maximizer covers frequently tested concepts through concise outlines, visual charts, and exam tips for an effective review in the final weeks of study, while performance data from your Simulated Exam and online MBE assignments helps pinpoint areas for improvement. Use these insights to study smarter, not harder.
Learn from Each Study Question
Remember that success on the MBE requires more than memorization. You must be able to recognize patterns, spot issues quickly, and apply legal rules to unfamiliar fact patterns under significant time pressure.
Work on improving how you read and analyze MBE multiple-choice questions. The MBE skills workshops offered during BARBRI bar prep teach you a systematic problem-solving strategy you can use on any question you encounter on the bar exam. This strategy helps you quickly identify the issue tested and the key facts that point you to the correct answer.
For each practice question, you should also determine whether you got it right or wrong, whether your analysis was on-point, and whether you identified and understood the narrow rule being tested. Reading through the explanatory answer for each question is crucial.
