The MBE can feel like a black box for many bar takers. You answer 200 questions, but how those answers translate into your final score is not always obvious.

Here is what you need to know.

The Basics of the MBE

The MBE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, but only 175 are scored. The remaining 25 are experimental and do not count toward your score.

You will not know which questions are unscored, so treat every question seriously.

Raw Score vs. Scaled Score

Your raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly.

Your scaled score adjusts your raw score to account for difficulty differences across exam administrations. This ensures fairness no matter when you take the exam.

Why Scaling Matters

Scaling prevents one group of test takers from being disadvantaged if their version of the exam is harder than another.

This means:

  • You are not competing directly against other test takers
  • Your performance is measured against a consistent standard

What Is a “Good” MBE Score?

That depends on your jurisdiction, but generally:

  • A scaled score around 135 is often considered competitive
  • Some jurisdictions require higher combined scores across all sections

The key is consistency across subjects rather than perfection in any one area.

How to Improve Your MBE Score

Success on the MBE comes from:

  • Practicing real, licensed questions
  • Learning patterns in how questions are tested
  • Reviewing explanations deeply, not just tracking scores

Exam Tip

Do not get discouraged by practice scores early in your prep. Improvement comes from understanding why answers are right or wrong, not just the number you get correct.

Bottom Line

The MBE is predictable if you understand how it works and prepare strategically. Focus on process, not just outcomes.
