The learning curve for junior lawyers is changing, with the introduction of GenAI, hybrid work, and a new emphasis on practice readiness. And to help young lawyers build the legal life skills of confidence, judgment, and communications, BARBRI Professional Education is leveraging simulations.

Simulations mirror the kind of work that associates do and allows them to rehearse the human side of law, such as client interactions, conversations with partners, making judgment calls, and written communication, in realistic, interactive scenarios that respond in real time.

Each simulation is a short, story-driven practice experience. It begins with a description of the roles, context, and stakes of the matter. Once the situation is established, the user is presented with a challenge, and the pressure builds as they are genuinely tested through resolution. Then, the user receives personal feedback that highlights their strengths, growth areas, and next steps.

The simulations include four modes of practice that hone the skills required in real legal work: voice conversation, email/written conversation, structured decision making, and active listening.

The exercises are designed to represent key moments in a first-year attorney’s life. These include:

  1. A Busy Week
In this simulation, two competing requests hit at once. The user must juggle priorities, manage expectations, and write a professional response that keeps things moving.
  2. Learning from Experience
Here, the learner turns to an experienced paralegal for insight, practicing respectful collaboration and discovering how smart lawyering depends on drawing knowledge from the whole team.
  3. Quiet Confidence
This simulation allows the user to prepare for a first client call, listen for what matters, and navigate the post-call debrief with professionalism, awareness, and calm judgment.
  4. Wedding Season
In real life, personal conflicts often collide with new assignments. This simulation allows the user to raise the issue early, candidly, and constructively with a partner.
  5. New Voice on the Call
Practicing the full arc of confident, professional communication, the user prepares a client update, delivers it live, and follows up in writing.
  6. Clarity and Courage
In this simulation, the user must decide when and how to speak up, raising concerns with the right timing, tone, and judgment to protect both the work and the relationship.

Knowing the law is half a young lawyer’s job. BARBRI Simulations teaches the other half, allowing for realistic practice that provides short, focused experiences that allow young lawyers to learn the types of skills that law school didn’t teach them. This leads to stronger outcomes for attorneys and firms.
