What's included in our SQE1 Prep course?

Your tailored, flexible online BARBRI Personal Study Plan (PSP) guides every assignment and activity throughout your entire BARBRI SQE1 Prep course. Your PSP delivers the right combination of substance and skills on a flexible schedule. Video lectures, workbooks and practice questions build knowledge over time, and all lecture materials are pre-recorded so you can access them online anytime. Learn more about our PSP here.

BARBRI SQE1 Prep faculty members are experienced qualified solicitors and barristers who teach you the substantive law for each subject.

The teaching materials and workshops are designed specifically to help you pass the exam. They are carefully crafted and regularly updated to convey exactly what you need to know in each subject. Materials are recorded so you can access them online anytime throughout the course, and lectures last about 20 to 30 minutes so that they fit easily into your schedule.

BARBRI has more than 50 years of experience training candidates to master multiple-choice question (MCQ) techniques and skills. These are the same skills you will need to pass the SQE1, but they may not be the skills you learned at university or earlier in your career.

During your SQE1 Prep course, you will practise thousands of multiple-choice questions to master the techniques and outcomes tested on the SQE1 exam. Learning and practice question sets build in difficulty over time and boost learning and retention through carefully planned repetition at key intervals. You will not only learn why an answer is correct, but also why the other options aren't correct.

In addition to the main practice multiple choice questions, there will be several multiple-choice practice tests delivered in exam style.  This means that the student must complete all the questions before they can see the answers. We still provide the students with detailed explanations of each question, including why the right answers are correct and why the wrong choices are incorrect.  There will be 8 mock tests throughout the course, which will include two 90-question practice tests for each of the two assessment areas. Finally, the SQE1 preparation course concludes with a full simulated exam which will replicate the SQE1 assessment specification, a full test of 360 questions.

All SQE Prep students will have a Learning Coach. Your coach will be a qualified solicitor who mentors you throughout your exam preparation.

You would be able to book time with a Learning Coach to see how you are progressing with your studies. They will also conduct livestream workshops, provide tips, and help you with any study issues.

Before the SQE1 Prep course begins, we supply each candidate with a full set of printed materials for their studies. These bespoke workbooks are written exclusively by our expert tutors for the subjects examined in the SQE1. Digital copies of the hardcopy workbooks are also available in the online learning platform and app.

ISAAC is the powerful engine that runs your BARBRI SQE Prep course and online learning platform. ISAAC works out a complete Personal Study Plan (PSP) for you, scheduling the modules around your available time. As you go through your course, ISAAC picks up on your progress, recalibrates and assigns you the most important and helpful material.

“Everything you need is in the BARBRI course, and you have more than enough to get you prepared, you just need to dedicate the time and remember to stay calm! It breaks a seemingly insurmountable task down into manageable pieces so it’s doable. Additionally, being able to know my weak areas made my study time a lot more efficient."

SQE1 Prep & Exam FAQs

You will be tested on the application of your Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK) through 360 single-best-answer multiple choice questions, split over two days. The exam is computer based and can be sat worldwide. The following subject areas are tested:

FLK1: Business Law and Practice; Dispute Resolution; Contract; Tort; Legal System of England and Wales; Constitutional and Administrative Law and EU Law and Legal Services.

FLK2: Property Practice; Wills and the Administration of Estates; Solicitors Accounts; Land Law; Trusts; Criminal Law and Practice.

Ethics and professional conduct are examined pervasively across both FLK exams, and principles of taxation are assessed in the context of Business Law and Practice, Property Practice, and Wills and the Administration of Estates.

Read more about the SQE1 exam here.

The BARBRI SQE1 Prep course is fully inclusive of all course materials. You’ll need to book and pay for the assessment separately, through the SRA and Pearson Vue websites:
£1,888  £944 for FLK1 and £944 for FLK2)
All fees are VAT exempt.

You must book FLK1 and FLK2 separately but pay for them both in a single payment at time of booking. FLK1 and FLK2 must be taken in the same assessment window (unless an exemption applies).

Candidates must pass both SQE1 and SQE2 within a six-year period and you have three attempts for each of the two stages. If you fail the SQE1 exam’s FLK1 and/or FLK2 three times during the six-year period, you must wait until that six-year period expires before re-applying. (Previous passes will not be carried forward.)

For more on this, please see the SRA website here.

All three prep course options contain the exact same materials and support, they just differ in the amount of time you have available to get through all the modules.

  • The Flexible course starts 40 weeks before the exam and gives you enough time to prepare if don’t have a law degree from an English or Welsh university, work full time, or are an international lawyer dual-qualifying. It requires 10-12 hours per week of study – we recommend 1 hour of study a day with 1 full day of study on the weekends.
  • The Focused 20-week course is suitable if you graduated with a UK degree in the last three years or you’re familiar with the common law through legal experience. It requires 20 study hours per week and we recommend 3 hours of study per day over the 7-day week period, and we recommend a part-time job, but if you work full time, you may want to consider the Flexible option instead.
  • The Accelerated 10-week course is the fastest way to qualify and is only suitable for recent UK law graduates with the ability and opportunity to study intensively and full-time. It requires 40 hours of study per week.

The SQE exam questions are similar to the US Bar exam ones, but completely different to the MCQs you may have encountered at university. A more apt way of describing them is as single-best-answer questions (SBAQs), where all the answer options are plausible or partially correct, but only one is 100% correct based on the context of the question.

You need to learn how SBAQs work, learn to spot the nuances, and understand the principles behind each law – and we at BARBRI are experts in these, having helped 1.45 million US bar students prepare for the bar exams. We turn every SBAQ practice question into a mini-lesson, and don’t just give the correct answer, but we also explain why it’s the correct answer, and why each of the other options weren’t the best answer in the given situation.
