Introduction

This webinar will examine how law firms, legal departments, and courts can identify and address bias affecting LGBTQIA+ legal professionals and clients. The panel will discuss current challenges within the profession, including barriers to advancement, workplace dynamics, and respectful communication involving identity and terminology.

Description

The panel will outline core issues facing LGBTQIA+ attorneys and staff, explaining how inclusion relates to professional responsibility and effective advocacy. Discussion will highlight patterns of bias, the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ professionals, and ways legal workplaces can foster environments that support equity and belonging.

Ms. Grubin serves as Barclay Damon's Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Creditors' Rights Practice Area co-chair. Her industry-agnostic practice involves representing debtors, creditors, fiduciaries, and official and unofficial committees in all aspects of voluntary and involuntary bankruptcy proceedings, corporate restructurings, and workouts in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. Ms. Grubin has served as the elected and appointed Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 trustee in cases pending in the Northern, Southern, and Eastern Districts of New York. Janice is and has been involved in a multitude of nationally significant Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases.

Vincent M. Rizzo

Mr. Rizzo represents private and public entities in litigation involving employment disputes, tort defense, and constitutional claims. He litigates matters under Title VII, Section 1983, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), personal injury, and property damage cases. Mr. Rizzo has successfully tried numerous civil jury trials to defense verdicts and secured multiple favorable summary judgments. His clients include Fortune 500 companies, school districts, and other state and local governmental entities. Mr. Rizzo advises on all aspects of the employment relationship, from hire through termination, and counsels on employee misconduct, discipline, and compliance. He provides comprehensive workplace training and conducts internal investigations involving whistleblower allegations, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. Mr. Rizzo holds a position as adjunct faculty at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, where he teaches Introduction to Trial Advocacy. He serves as vice president of Chicago’s LGBTQ+ Bar Association and is a member of Hinshaw’s LGBTQ affinity group. Mr. Rizzo also serves on the faculty of Hinshaw University and is a member of both the Associate Interviewing Committee and Mentoring Committees.
