About the Course

Introduction

This CLE webinar will examine gambling disorder and related compulsive/impulse control patterns that can impair attorney judgment, reliability, and financial integrity before resulting in missed deadlines, client complaints, or a trust account problem. The panel will provide a stigma-aware framework for recognizing impairment, protecting clients, and supporting recovery.

Description

The faculty will discuss early warning signs in practice settings: secrecy and loss of time awareness, "chasing" behavior, elevated risk-taking, mood-driven decisions, and sudden financial disruption. The experts will also explore adjacent compulsive behavior driving similar consequences, such as compulsive trading/speculation, compulsive spending, and other impulse control patterns, and explain how these issues interact with stress, anxiety, depression, and substance use.

The panel will cover documenting concerns, triaging client protection, involving supervision/HR/ethics counsel appropriately, and connecting the attorney to lawyer assistance programs (LAPs) or other resources.

Niki L. Irish, LICSW
Outreach and Education Coordinator
D.C. Bar Lawyer Assistance Program

Ms. Irish, LICSW has over 15 years of experience in the mental health field, with a focus on wellbeing and addiction. For over ten years she served as the Senior Counselor for the D.C. Bar Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP), providing lawyers and law students with addiction and mental health assessments, counseling, consultation and psychoeducation. Ms. Irish currently serves as the Outreach and Education Coordinator for the LAP providing a variety of trainings and educational seminars to law schools, legal employers, voluntary bar associations, and other legal organizations. She has a B.S. in Psychology and Family Studies and an MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, with a concentration in Employee Assistance Programs. Ms. Irish is licensed to practice clinical social work in the District of Columbia.

Mr. Quinn is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of PA, Inc., an independent non-profit dedicated to the well-being of lawyers, judges, their families and law students. He has presented CLE approved Educational seminars and programs on a variety of topics in the field of substance use, mental health and general wellness in the legal profession to lawyers and organizations on a state, national and international level. Mr. Quinn is also the founder of the Havertown Law Office of Brian S. Quinn, P.C., where he focuses primarily on Estate planning and administration. He has also had extensive experience in DUI, divorce, elder law, and real estate transactions.
