US Bar Prep (International) FAQs

Can I Practice in Other US States When I Become an Attorney in California or New York?

California is a state-specific bar exam which means that once you qualify in California, you can only practice as an attorney in California. California will introduce the NextGen bar exam from July 2028.

New York currently administers the Legacy Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), a standardized bar exam created by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), which is currently administered by many additional states. The NCBE is transitioning to the NextGen Uniform Bar Exam, and New York will adopt the NextGen UBE exam starting with the July 2028 administration.

Examinees who take the UBE earn a portable score that can be transferred to seek admission in other UBE jurisdictions. However, without completing a three-year JD post-graduate law degree from an accredited US law school, foreign candidates cannot waive into most UBE states jurisdictions and become qualified there, even while being qualified in New York.

Is State-Specific Content Covered in My BARBRI US Bar Prep International Course?

Yes, BARBRI US Bar Prep International is designed to prepare students to pass the bar in all legacy and NextGen UBE jurisdictions as well as California.

Do You Ship Books and Study Materials Internationally?

Yes, you can request international shipment of your BARBRI books. When you confirm your shipping address, you will be able to designate an international address and provide payment for the shipping costs. Our books are typically not taxed at customs in local countries. From time to time our shipping supplier may issue restrictions due to international events.

Do I Need a Special Visa to Take the Bar Exam?

There is no particular visa required to travel to the United States to sit for a US bar exam. Traveling on a normal tourist visa is sufficient.

Can I Complete My BARBRI US Bar Prep International Course Entirely Online?

Yes, you can complete 100% of your BARBRI course online anywhere in the world as long as you have a strong, stable internet connection.

What is the Easiest US State Bar Exam for International Lawyers?

There isn’t a single “easiest” US bar exam — and focusing only on pass rates can be misleading. Pass rates vary widely by state and by exam sitting, and they don’t reflect your individual chances of success. Some states (often smaller UBE jurisdictions) report higher pass rates, while others, like California, tend to be lower.

Your background (degree type, jurisdiction, whether you’re qualified) matters far more than the perceived “difficulty” of the exam. The better question is: “Which states am I most likely eligible for?” The most accessible and commonly chosen jurisdictions are New York California. Do the eligibility quiz here:

What is the New York Bar Exam Eligibility for International Students?

To sit the New York Bar Exam as an international candidate, eligibility depends mainly on your legal education. You may qualify if:

  • You hold a three-year (or longer) common law law degree (such as a UK LLB) that is substantially equivalent to a US law degree.

  • Your degree is assessed and approved by the New York Board of Law Examiners through a formal credential evaluation.

If your degree does not meet these requirements, you can often become eligible by completing a qualifying LLM at an ABA-approved US law school. Final eligibility is always determined by the state board, so early evaluation is essential.

What is the California Bar Exam Eligibility for International Students?

Though the California exam itself is considered one of the most challenging, California is known for being more flexible on entry routes for international candidates. You may be eligible if you are a qualified lawyer in good standing in another country — in which case you can often sit the exam without additional US study.

If you are not yet qualified, you will typically need to complete additional legal education in the US, such as an LLM or at least one year of law study at an ABA-approved or California-accredited law school.

Is a UK Law Degree Accepted for the US Bar Exam?

It depends on the US state’s eligibility criteria and your specific degree. In many cases, a UK law degree is a strong starting point, since the UK’s common law system aligns closely with the US legal system. This supports eligibility, especially in New York.

However, even with a UK LLB, many states require additional US study, typically an LLM from an ABA-approved law school.
