What is the Bar Exam?

The bar exam is, in most jurisdictions, a two-day examination, which is one of the requirements for bar admission. The Uniform Bar Exam comprises three primary components:

  1. The Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question multiple-choice exam

  2. The Multistate Essay Exam (MEE), a six-question essay exam

  3. The Multistate Performance Test, a test that assesses an applicant's ability to perform realistic legal tasks, such as drafting legal documents or analyzing a client's case scenario. Although the majority of jurisdictions are UBE states, there are state-specific exams administered by each jurisdiction. There is not one exam that every state takes. Rather, each jurisdiction (JDX) can opt in to the Unified Bar Exam (UBE) or create its own comparable test:

  • States: Most U.S. States 

  • Territories: Virgin Islands  

JURISDICTION-SPECIFIC EXAMS 
NextGen 
The following 10 jurisdictions will administer the NextGen UBE when it debuts on in July 2026: Connecticut, Guam, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, Palau, Virgin Islands, and Washington. After that initial launch, adoption will accelerate quickly in 2027 and 2028.
