Mississippi Bar Exam details

Day 1

• Six essay questions drafted by the state board
• One 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) question
• Six Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions

Day 2

• Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam (100 questions in the AM, 100 questions in the PM)

• Contracts/Sales
• Criminal Law/Procedure
• Evidence
• Federal Civil Procedure
• Real Property
• Torts

Mississippi Essay Subjects

Prior to exam, Board indicates to all applicants for that exam which subjects will be tested on the six essays drafted by the Board.

• Administrative Law
• Bankruptcy
• Business Organizations (including Corporations, Partnerships, and Agency)
• Conflict of Laws
• Domestic Relations
• Federal Income Taxation
• Federal Jurisdiction and Rules of Civil Procedure
• MS Constitutional Law
• Practice and Procedure of MS Courts
• Professional Conduct and Ethics
• Uniform Commercial Code
• Wills
• Estates
• Trusts and Future Interests (including basic federal tax consequences)
• Plus all MBE subjects

MPT

• “Closed universe” practical questions using instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.

MPRE

• A scaled score of 75 is required for admission to the bar. This score must be achieved within 24 months before or 12 months after passing the bar exam.

The Mississippi Bar Exam is scored as the following:

• MBE weighted 40%
• State essays weighted 30%
• MEE weighted 15%
• MPT weighted 15%

A total score of 132 (out of 200) or higher is required to pass.

Acceptance of MBE Score

An applicant who has taken the MBE, either in Mississippi or in another jurisdiction, within the immediately preceding 20-month period may elect to utilize the scaled score which he or she achieved on said previous administration of the MBE in lieu of retaking the MBE during current Mississippi Bar Examination.

Admission on Motion

A member in good standing of a reciprocating jurisdiction may be admitted on motion in Mississippi if the applicant has engaged in the full-time practice of law for no less than five years preceding application. Additional requirements apply.
