Negotiation Skills course overview
The new IBA & BARBRI Negotiation Skills Course will help you develop powerful negotiation skills by focusing on 9 core technical modules.
Starting on Monday 13th November, 2023, the course runs for six weeks. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a digital badge and certification which can be used towards your CPD hours.
The course costs £449 with options to either self-fund or to ‘Bill my employer’ for those with approved learning and development budget available.
Negotiation Skills: Course overview
The phases and different types of negotiation (including contentious and noncontentious)
The role of personal beliefs and emotions in negotiations
How to set short/medium/long-term objectives, and methods of preparation
Setting the agenda, choosing the best venue, deciding who goes first
Considering associated skills including trading, questioning, clarifying, being assertive
Communicating through signalling, projecting, and reading body language
When to take a break, look at other aspects of the deal, changing something to allow people to climb down
How to detect them and deal with them effectively
Seeing light in the tunnel, pulling together the loose ends, summarising the agreement

Meet your tutors

Alisa Gray
Alisa is a Director of Learning at BARBRI, responsible for the design and delivery of substantive legal and business skills training programmes including the Prep for Practice programme.
Alisa is a qualified solicitor with over 10 years’ experience in private practice, in both fee earning and support lawyer roles, at Wilde Sapte, Allen & Overy and Linklaters.
She is an experienced trainer and is part of BARBRI’s SQE faculty. Alisa delivered postgraduate law at Kaplan Law School and was a QLTS business law exam writer (MCT and OSCE) and assessor for over 6 years, forming part of Kaplan’s original QLTS faculty. Alisa has an MSc in organisational psychology and is continuing her research into lawyers’ wellbeing as a PhD.

Emily Allen
Emily is a BARBRI Senior Tutor with programme lead responsibility for SQE1.
Emily practised at the independent and employed criminal bar as a defence barrister for 2 years before moving into higher education and joining BPP. Emily worked as a lecturer at BPP for 10 years, teaching criminal law, land law and various skills modules both face-to-face and online. She also undertook managerial and developmental roles at BPP, including Head of Modules on the GDL and LLB programmes.
Emily has worked for BARBRI on the QLTS and SQE programmes, including mentoring students on the MCT/SQE1 programme and acting as a course tutor on the OSCE/SQE2 programme.

John Trimbos
John Trimbos is an experienced trainer specialising in interpersonal and management training.
John studied Law at St. John's College, Oxford, and qualified as a solicitor in 1988. After beginning his career in real estate at the Treasury Solicitors Department, John practiced for many years before developing new skills as an in-house training manager at city law firms including Watson Farley and Williams, Ashurst and Norton Rose.
John is passionate about business skills training, combining his business experience and his skills as a trainer to create interactive, practical, and memorable training courses.
